Meiji period Japanese box with very beautifully detailed chrysanthemums “kiku” in high relief and almost life-like petals. In Japan, the chrysanthemum is very cherished as a symbol of the imperial house, and the term “chrysanthemum throne” refers both to the actual throne as well as the emperor himself. Every year the 'Festival of Happiness' is celebrated in honour of the chrysanthemum. The side panels of the box depict birds in stormy seas with waves in the style of The Great Wave by Hokusai, all in relief. The inside lining is no longer there and has revealed the initials JBK, possibly the mark of the maker. Very heavy metal. Early 1900s.
