Beautiful 19th century Staffordshire transferware plate with a scalloped border and central imagery of a classical urn in a romantic Italianate landscape. The border has alternating floral cartouches and scenic reserve, and the whole composition is especially beautiful in this rich and rare purple. The back has the marking “Canova Stoneware” and the pattern is attributed to Thomas Mayer and said to be inspired by the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. It has a tiny chip on the edge, but is overall in spectacular condition given its age. Made in England.
