Rare-sized vintage glazed and polychrome earthenware statue of Mother Mary with Jesus in perfect condition. It is 2 feet in height and almost 5kgs in weight. The detail of the drapery, the crown and the expressions are exquisite. Mary’s right hand is held up in a trinitarian blessing, and she holds baby Christ in her left hand. In His left hand, the Infant Jesus holds a miniature globe topped by a cross, representing His kingship over the world. His right hand is raised in the same blessing as Mary. There is a ship at the base of the statue, and this may be from Bandel, which has one of the oldest churches in Bengal. According to folklore, in 1655, a Portuguese ship is said to have encountered a violent storm in the Bay of Bengal, and the Captain promised to donate the main mast of the ship to the first church they see if they made it through. They did survive and and landed near Bandel Church, and the mast is still a part of the display there. The Mother Mary there got the name "Our Lady of the Good Voyage", and is said to fulfil wishes of the visitors to the church to this date.
This piece was acquired from an old family home that was being pulled down in Calcutta, the great grandmother had it installed in their altar even though they were not Christians, so this is definitely a vintage piece that is from 3 generations ago, and should be from the early 1900s.
