These figures were inspired by paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, who was the first Indian painter to apply European-style realism to Indian subjects, creating a unique style of Indian Naturalism. Prints of his paintings became so popular that German porcelain makers started making figures based on his paintings, Victorian style figures based on Hindu mythology. Here, Saraswati is depicted sitting on a throne, carrying her veena in one hand and a book in the other, symbolic of wisdom and the arts. Her foot is on the back of her swan. Her jewellery is very beautifully detailed and the folds on her sari are very realistic. There is some loss of paint and a small hairline crack at the back, but the porcelain figurine is in perfect condition given its age. Made in Germany in the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

Approximately 8.5 inches in height, 4.6 inches in width, 3.8 inches in depth and 452 grams in weight.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0177/1546/files/Vintage_Saraswati_in_German_made_Porcelain00001.jpg?v=1790423629
