The ring at the center of the base would hold a small adjustable wick-fed spirit burner to keep the water boiling right at the serving table. The handle on top and the finial are fitted with ebonised wood to shield the server's hands from the heat. The kettle can also be removed from the base by removing the securing pins on both sides.
