Vintage statue of the Garuda hand-carved out of Sal wood, originating from Tamil Nadu. The Garuda is a divine part human, part eagle-like sun bird and the king of birds, and is the mount of Lord Vishnu. He is the personification of courage and is often depicted as having the golden body of a strong man with a white face, red wings, and an eagle's beak and with a crown on his head. Here he is shown as prescribed by the scriptures, in a kneeling figure, wearing a serpent around it’s neck, with his hands in the “abhaya” (nothing to fear) posture. In southern India, especially Tamil Nadu, annual religious festivals that last from a week to ten days involve the parading of deities mounted on a vehicle around the temple. A similar hand-carved Garuda of this detail resides in the National Museum of Delhi, India.
