The Kirpan Necklace was one of the pieces that turned out way more beautiful and powerful than I imagined it. I felt like it was divinely guided, and that it was a necklace waiting to happen.
It has also had a life of it’s own. I planned as a dramatic opening piece for a Fashion Week runway show, but it decided it wanted to be more. It became one of our best sellers, got featured in Lark Book Publishers collectors series ‘500 Art Necklaces’, showcased at the ‘Hot Under The Collar’ Exhibition at the SNAG conference, and continues to be one of our most remembered pieces.
I also felt that the Kirpan Necklace was perfect expression of who I am. Having been brought up on the Sikh ideology in the land of Goddess Durga lead me to deeply believe that good must triumph over evil, and that standing up against injustice is our imperative individual responsibility. The Kirpan Necklace also turned out to be the perfect representation of a woman- a beautiful and graceful crescent shaped jewel on the outside, with sheer practical power and strength on the inside.
Over the years, as our jewellery has moved towards a smaller, more delicate direction, we have been experimenting with the challenges of making a miniature of the Kirpan Necklace, while retaining all its details.
Just as the triumphant goddess Durga is being prepared to be welcomed into the festivities of the Pujas in Calcutta in a few days, we present to you the Mini Kirpan Necklace, a labour of love and passion, a symbol of power and grace, and a representation of our choice to always stand up in the face of injustice.
