German made porcelain slip cast figure of goddess Annapurna made for colonial India in the early 1900s. These figures were inspired by paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, who was the first Indian painter to apply European-style realism to Indian subjects, creating a unique style of Indian Naturalism. Prints of his paintings became so popular that German porcelain makers started making figures based on his paintings, Victorian style figures based on Hindu mythology. Annapurna is the goddess of food, nourishment and abundance, and is a manifestation of Parvati. This figure shows Annapurna sitting on a beautiful and detailed throne in a gorgeous pink sari holding a bowl of food in one hand and the other hand outstretched to offer the food to Shiva. One of her feet rests on a lotus, and the figure has a solid decorated base. There is gold gilt on her crown, sari border and throne, and the base. There is a stamp “H.P.Ltd.” at the back, most likely the name of the company importing these from Germany. There is some loss of paint, but the porcelain figurine is in perfect condition given its age. Made in the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
