Old Soul Bitong I

Size Guide

An oriental bitong or bamboo calligraphy brush holder, one of the four treasures found on a scholar’s desk. It has four different patterns on each side- bamboos forest, irises, chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms, all in low relief. Chrysanthemums symbolise happiness and vitality; cherry blossoms represent renewal- life, death and beauty; bamboos stand for virtue, moral integrity, humility, and loyalty; and Irises hope, wisdom, trust and valour. Bitongs were appreciated not only for their functionality but for their aesthetic qualities and values. Can be used as a pen stand or a tea light holder. Most likely made in Japan, early 1900s.
