Antique cabbage-shaped soup tureen in faience glazed creamware, similar to Majolica pottery. It is made in the Tromp L'oeil style which was very popular in the 18th century. Trompe l'oeil ceramics were intended as fantastical objects, meant to embody the theatricality of the times. Through humor and attention to detail, they would spark a conversation as dinner guests picked up for example cabbage halves to reveal the soup. Each cabbage leaf is perfectly detailed and uniquely coloured. The tureen is in excellent condition, there is some minor loss to the glaze. It stands on 4 feet and the underside has the stamp that says Italy.
