Old Soul Box XXIV

Size Guide

Beautifully and rare Sireh or betel box from Malaysia or Indonesia. The box is of typical octagonal shape, and the moulded and stepped lid is decorated with flowers while the sides are patterned with waterlilies in hand done chiselling. Boxes such as this example are based on 18th century Dutch tobacco boxes of similar though smaller form, as these countries were formerly Dutch colonies. They were meant to hold betel or tobacco, and were a treasured part of the culture. Michael Backman Ltd where a similar piece was sold dates this at 19th century or earlier.
