Vintage Devo or oil lamp that is meant to be a part of a 'ses', or ceremonial Parsi tray. It is traditionally a pierced fretwork container inside which an oil lamp is lit, symbolic of the light which dispels the darkness. On one side is a beautiful image of Zarathustra and on the other an 'afargan' or a chalice containing the holy fire. The other two sides have the symbol of the sun and its rays, and the grapes on the body signify abundance and joy. The base has the stamp “Best Best German Silver, L.A.Parekh. There is an inscription on the side of this 'devo' that reads “To Coomi Bhaucha, With every good wishes, From Pupil Dogdo E.Balsara, 1952”. Would have been made in the 1940s.
