Rare Chinese double gourd vase with the Eight Immortals depicted in 3 dimension with their respective attributes amongst cloud wisps. It has a thick, bulbous lower section converging into a lemon-shape midsection and finishing into a slender bottleneck at the top. In Daoist mythology the Eight Immortals are a group of legendary transcendent celestial beings who are believed to know the secrets of nature. Each Immortal's power can be transferred to a tool of power, kind of a talisman associated with a certain meaning, that can give life or destroy evil. This bottle gourd is an auspicious symbol abundance, good health, longevity and wealth, and is believed to protect the home from evil. This piece has been polished in recent times, and the patina can be seen in the crevices of the casting.
