Vintage Korean mother-of-pearl lacquerware table, traditionally known as a Sobhan. This deep reddish-brown natural lacquer was historically reserved for royalty or special shamanic rites, and the iridescent mother of pearl inlay is made from the inner layer of abalone shells. The peony, known in Korean culture as the "King of Flowers" symbolises wealth, honour, and high social status, and the butterflies fluttering around the flower symbolise happiness, marital harmony, and joy. The table features curved "tiger legs" known as Hojokban which can be folded away at the back. A Sobhan functioned as a personal dining or tea tray, and they are prized as collectible art pieces today. Should be from the mid 1900s, Korea.
