This vintage hand-knotted Iranian Khiam carpet is from the Tabriz Province, a region known for its weaving traditions and artistic precision. It features a majestic Phoenix motif at its center along with other animals, symbolising rebirth, immortality and divine power, an iconic theme rooted in Persian mythology. The burgundy field is adorned with intricate floral vines, flower filled vases, peacocks and other birds. The articulated border is filled with mythical creatures and classical floral elements. Pictorial rugs like these are way more complex than geometric or simple floral rugs because the weaver cannot memorise the pattern; they must follow a complex "Talim" or map for every single knot. This one is crafted from Kurk wool (very soft wool from the neck of the sheep) which has a natural sheen on a high-quality cotton foundation for a luxurious finish and lasting durability. This Khiam Phoenix carpet is a masterpiece of Persian art and artistry.
